Safari sketches

In October I went to Tanzania with Projects Abroad for a building project. While I was there, I had the opportunity to go on a safari with other volunteers and I made some sketches there. Here they are:

Also, "Inside Llewyn Davis" is a very good movie, the Coen brothers are great moviemakers.

I painted something weird...

Also, if you want to see some great animated short stories, check out this site: Late Night Work Club

"Late Night Work Club is a loose, rotating collective of indie animators.
That is, animators who do independent, non-commercial work.

It’s an excuse to bring a whole bunch of us together and make something great, and also to promote the work of the artists involved.
Some of the best, most personal, experimental and vital animation going right now is happening on the internet.
It’s being made late at night when other people have gone to sleep and on weekends when everyone else is out.
It’s being made by students, freelancers, full-timers and folks with unrelated day jobs. It means something to us.
It’s our scene."

90's kids

Second design for the 90's challenge.
Not very satisfied with the end result, linework isn't very clean...
I had the most fun thinking of which characters to use and what to make them do.

Also, here's a teaser for the movie I had a chance to work on for the past year (layout, animation fix, texture wrangling, finaling, and other junior position jobs).

Minimalism Design + Interesting Kickstarter

A design for the minimalism challenge on Threadless:

I recently discovered another interesting Kickstarter project by 2 Disney Veterans.
"It's a story about an 11-year-old, meticulous boy, WALT, and his crazy, loopy GRANDPA -- two complete opposites -- who get stuck in a vast, imaginative WORLD OF PAINTINGS.  Inside, they cross paths with a ruthless painted character determined to make it into our world.  In order to get home and stop the villain, Walt and Grandpa have to set aside their differences, work together and navigate worlds where the rules can change around every corner."

(this reminded me a lot of my graduation movie)

Also, NANA nana nana nana NANA nana nana nana BATMAAN! (I bought some Batman comics)

Ride Free! Threadless Design + Making of

So, I made this t-shirt design (whoda thunk?) in collaboration with Daniel Arzola. He came up with the idea, and I made the design.
Here it is.

(it finished scoring with a 3.10, which is a decent score)

Here are the steps I took to make the design:

After Daniel proposed some ideas, I went for the idea I liked most: a few circus bears with hats on, riding around on bikes in the jungle .

I made two sketches, this is the one I used for the final design.

Then I did the lineart, I tried to make it as clean and readable as possible.

After that, I coloured it in, but I limited myself to a few colours. That way it wouldn't end up being too colourful and busy.

Then I did a fast paint (in grayscale) to see how it works with lighting.

I proceeded to work on the grayscale, adding more detail and contrast.

When it was finished I duplicated the grayscale and set one layer to Overlay and the other to Soft Light.
After adding some details like the background, this is what the final result looks like:

That's it!

Also, if you don't know what to listen to at work, come and join me on Grooveshark, we do a Broadcast every working day and usually I'm the "DJ".

Threadless Animated GIF's

About a year ago, Nathan Pyle started a blog with a challenge: turn existing Threadless designs into an animated GIF. A few weeks ago, the same challenge was launched again!
Because I'm not animating for the work I do now, this was a perfect opportunity to do so (and it's been a while).

These are the GIF's I made (keep in mind, I only animated this, the designs belong to other people):

(The Animator's Survival Kit was a great help for this one)

A bit weird maybe, but I liked making it.
