So, the inevitable has happened, I have been nominated/challenged to the Ice Bucket Challenge. In case you have been living under a rock (with no wifi connection) for the past days here's what it is about:
you get challenged to either throw a bucket of cold water with ice-cubes over your head and post a video of it on-line within 24 hours of your 'nomination' or you donate 100€ to the ALS research programme. Then you nominate four people, who in turn will have to do the same.
I get that it's a horrible disease, and would not wish it upon anyone. And I sincerely hope the money they raise will help in defeating this illness. And I also get the fact that by doing this kind of neknomination through videos on public media, it raises awareness to a previously almost unheard of disease. But by now everyone must have heard of it, and it's kind of turning into a hype. And I do not like the fact that people are wasting water to continue this fad (according to some calculations, 20 million litres of water have been used in this campaign) when there are still people in the world who don't have access to clean drinking water. Also, to do this research, they are doing test on animals and use stem-cell transplantation (from embryo's). Not very ethical...
And one last point: I believe that charity should not be forced on people, but should come from the heart. Now that we've raised the awareness (of one of many muscle and nerve related diseases in this fallen world), let people give what they want, and how much they want.
In stead of throwing a bucket of icy water over myself, I was thinking of another way to make a video. I then thought of recording myself sitting in a chair trying not to move for at least an hour, to experience what it must be like to have ALS. But then I figured, how is that going to help those people? So in stead of wasting an hour doing nothing, I came up with another 'challenge':
Consider buying one of these two shirts I made.
If it reaches 50 funders before the deadline, it will get printed and become available for purchase afterwards. Everyone gets a shirt out of it and I make some money. I will donate all the profit I make out of it to charity (a part to ALS research, another part to other institutions). Of course, you can always just donate the money in stead of buying this shirt. Your choice.

I'm just sharing my opinion...

so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
